Week 3: Predictions

Last week I was 7-2, with an overall record of 13-5.

Averett @ Ferrum

Saturday is my birthday, and as much as I would like to be at W.B. Adams stadium, I will wait and travel to Ferrum for homecoming.
This is an important week as conference games begin, and for Ferrum, this is a huge game.  This is not a given win for the Panthers and the next three games will tell a lot about the Ferrum football program. While all of the conference games are important, these next three will pose stiff competition for Ferrum.
Let's not look too far down the road.....let's focus on Averett.

The Cougars have primarily a run based offense. In fact in their first two games, they have only attempted 26 passes. Their primary running back, Sean Bowman leads the conference in rushing with 309 yards on 50 carries. That is 25 carries per game. That is a lot of touches, and what that tells me is that Averett's offensive line must be pretty capable.

If that is the case, Ferrum's defense has to be up to the test. So far this season, Ferrum has only given up 225 rushing yards, and have not given up a rushing touchdown. This game could be a nail biter, and I think it will take something special like a great special team play, or a defensive touchdown to win this game. I will give a slight edge to Ferrum based on momentum, and home field advantage.
No matter what the score, a Ferrum win will be a great birthday present!

Ferrum wins 32-28

Here is the rest of this weeks schedule:

North Carolina Wesleyan @ Huntingdon

LaGrange @ Methodist

Maryville @ Emory and Henry

Brevard @ Greensboro

Go Panthers!

  1. Allen love the blog and your weekly post. I do want to ask you though do you think this team has the tools to be special and could they be legit contenders for the conference championship?

  2. This is the million dollar question.....My feeling is that Ferrum is looking pretty solid on most all fronts. There are three things that right now are impressing me.....
The passing game, is really looking good. along with that is the offensive line pass protection.....and the passing game also includes the receivers. Air Clifford & Company are hitting on all cylinders right now. The defensive Line. Have been very solid, and have not given up a rushing touchdown. The level of focus and preparation brought to this team by the coaches is very evident, and has gone a long way toward the success.
My concerns coming into the season was the defense.....especially the linebackers, and the defensive backs. So how have they done so far? There have only been three touchdowns given up by the Panthers in the first two games.....more accurately, they were all given up to Apprentice......Emory and Henry, the team picked to win the ODAC, did not score any :) Unfortunately, those all came through the air.
So far, the defense is looking quite strong, but they may be vulnerable to the pass. As long as Montel Lee is in the face of the quarterback, we will do well on D.
Brian Mann will begin to shine as the passing game continues to improve. You can keep the box full to stop Mann, but Ferrum will throw on you. You can drop defenders back to cover the pass, but Mann will run on you. Look for Mann to get his groove back....maybe this weekend.
In this conference, you lose one conference game, and you can still win the conference, but you may need help. If you loose two conference games, you need a miracle to win the conference.
Ferrum is looking like a legitimate contender, but they need to handle business the next two weekends. Averett will no go away without a fight, and they have talent. I sort of see them as one dimensional, with not a great passing game.....at least it has not been a factor to this point.
This will not be an easy game, but Ferrum should win. A win Saturday, and the stage is set for a huge homecoming....and I am planning on being there.

So this has been a long winded answer to a pretty basic million dollar question. The short answer is yes I do, and I have to say that the preparation the coaches do to get the team ready for their opponent is very evident.
Ferrum is like a coiled spring.....full of energy, waiting to unleash their power on the next opponent.
    Thanks for reading the blog!

    Go Panthers!!
