Ferrum hands LaGrange 13-10 loss
Black Hats Now 2-1

It was a beautiful day for the Ferrum Panthers to host the LaGrange Panthers at Adams Field. For the most part, this was a defensive battle as the entire first quarter was scoreless, and it was almost a scoreless first half until Seth Deaton hit his first field goal of the day from 38 yards with :50 seconds left.

After the converted field goal, Deaton kicked off and the LaGrange kick returner Jaden Smith must have thought he was hit by a truck when Ferrum Panther David Hudnell hit him at the 16-yard

line. The Hudnell smack down forced the ball loose, and Junior Safety Jerron Sellars pounced on the ball, giving Ferrum excellent field position. Unable to score a touchdown, and with time running out in the half, Ferrum settled for a second Seth Deaton field goal, this one from 26 yards, and that is how the half ended with Ferrum up 6-0.

Ferrum received the ball to open the second half and went three and out. Deaton punted, and LaGrange took over at their own 36-yard line. On their first play, the Ferrum defense forced them back to their 20-yard line with a 16-yard loss. LaGrange would soon be forced to punt, and Ferrum would start their second possession of the half at their own 30-yard line. This possession would prove fruitful as Ferrum employed a nice mix of runs and passes to sustain a 12-play drive that culminated in a Jahylen Lee 3 yard run that, with the extra point, gave Ferrum a 13-0 lead.

LaGrange would start their next drive with 6:14 left in the third quarter. The drive consisted of 10 plays and ended with a 29-yard field goal, putting LaGrange on the board. LaGrange would kick off , and Ferrum would take over possession with 2:40 left in the third quarter, leading 13-3.

From this point, neither team could muster dominate offensive drives. There were no more scores in the game until LaGrange, with 5:16 left did drive from their own 46 to score their only touchdown with :50 seconds left in the game. The XP put them within three, 13-10. LaGrange attempted an onside kick, but Ferrum recovered, and they ran the clock out for the win.

It was quite a game and again, I continue to see improvement. Ferrum will have this weekend off as this is their open weekend. Look for them to be prepared to host their third game in a row on September 30th, as the Hornets from Shenandoah come to Ferrum for the first ODAC game of the season.

Go Panthers!
