Ferrum Comes From Behind to Win Defensive Battle 14-10

Well the points were not as plentiful as I thought they would be, but in the end, a win is a win, and Ferrum got that win and the happy bus ride home. There was not a lot of offensive firepower put up by either team if you just go by the scoring, but each team did put up solid offensive numbers, especially through the air. Ferrum had 180 yards passing (11 of 30 and 1 passing touchdown) while Bridgewater was 26 of 46 for 227 yards. The Eagles did not score through the air, and were intercepted twice.

Bridgewater took a 3-0 lead with 5:40 left in the first quarter as they hit a 21 yard field goal. They would score in the second quarter on a two yard run to end a 13 play drive. This gave them a 10-0 lead that carried into halftime.

Ferrum, who was held scoreless in the first half, came out on the first possession of the second half and drove the ball downfield on a 9 play 72 yard drive ending with a Zac Smiley one yard touchdown. After the Deaton extra point, Ferrum was back in the game 10-7. The third quarter ended with the same score, and the final period seemed to be fought mostly between the 35yard lines. With time growing short, Ferrum took the ball 66 yards in 5 plays  culminating in a Titus Jones to Nic Cook 26 yard touchdown pass. The extra point gave Ferrum the lead 14-10, and that is how the game would end.

It was interesting that Ferrum was scoreless in the first half, and Bridgewater was scoreless in the second half. I just feel like Ferrum's offense is on the cusp of blowing up for a high scoring game, but it has not happened yet. Their offensive point total has been 31, 26, 30, and 14 in their wins, and 21 in their loss. The Panthers are averaging 24.4 points per game, and are giving up an average of 25 points per game. The former has to increase, while the later must be reduced.

Lets enjoy this win. It was a good conference victory, but there needs to be improvement as the 4-1 Shenandoah Hornets come to W.B. Adams stadium Saturday for the Panthers homecoming. Look for this to be a hard fought game by both teams. More to come on this game later in the week.

Go Panthers!
