It has been a while since I have posted, and quite frankly, I found it difficult to post about the spring football season. The entire season was just too different. No fans at games, wrong time of year, Friday games. It just did not feel like Ferrum football. There were some good things that came out of the spring season, but it left me a little indifferent.
What I saw that I really liked about the spring season, were the capabilities and possibilities within the team. There are some talented players on this team, and I am really excited about the teams chances this season. Whether they will be in the running for the conference title is tough to tell, but I am of the opinion that this team should not be taken lightly, and is capable of beating any team in the conference.
Looking to the future, Ferrum has apparently identified size on the offensive line as something they would like to enhance, and have taken some substantial steps to do so. Some sizes of incoming freshmen are:
6'4" 220
6'3" 295
6'4" 250
6'1" 270
6'5" 363
Plus four other freshmen who are all 250 lbs. or more.
Looking to the upcoming season, I expect that you will see a strong passing attack as Titus Jones should be poised to again control the offense. Look for Tmahdae Penn, Sophomore WR out of Magna Vista to be a favorite target as well as Nic Cook.
As for the ground game, it is hard to read. Returning Senior J'Sean Dupuy will likely be the workhorse of the running game, but will not be alone in the backfield. His efforts will be complimented by Sophomore Marcus Cutler and Junior Joe Burris. My take is that the ground game will need to be strong to bring a sense of balance to the offense. Based on the short season, there is room for improvement.
Defensively, Ferrum seemed to have some strong efforts, but at times gave up too much to their opponents on the ground and through the air. Look for Virginia Beach product Billy Higgins to be a leader on the defensive side of the ball. In the 5 game short season, Higgins had 23 solo tackles and 30 assists, ranking him 3rd in the conference. Look for Drew Hill and Raymond Alexander to also bolster the defensive attack.
As for Special Teams, the roster is showing only 3 Freshmen P/K. I am not certain how to evaluate these guys, so this will be a wait and see.
As for the season, I think Ferrum could start out 3-0. I would look for things to get a bit more uphill after that. It is hard to say, as predicting this conference will not be easy. Look for Ferrum, if they can pull off a couple of upsets, to be in the hunt at the end of the season.
Go Panthers!
