FINALLY!!! The time has come to strap the Black Hat on and go after it. This has been a long time coming in some ways, and we as a nation have dealt with so much change. Altered schedules, altered jobs, and in so many ways an altered reality. Covid has taken a lot from us, but for me tomorrow means a semblance of normalcy returns. I am cautious not to peer too far into the future, so I will take tomorrow for just what it is.....a day to regain a little of what we have lost. A day to take a step back toward what we have known before the virus......a day of Ferrum football.
What can we expect for tomorrow? Besides the excitement of having fans back, the matchup on the field is some what unclear to me. I know Averett went 1-3 in the short season, but what can we glean from that?
With both teams showing success through the air, I am looking for the pressure to be on both secondary's in this one. Bryce Jackson will return for Averett. Jackson threw for 885 yards last year, with 8 T.D's, and 7 interceptions. As for the receivers from the spring season, his three main targets are all back.
Ferrum counters with Titus Jones. Jones threw for 1076 yards 7 T.D's, with only three interceptions. Jones will have his number one receiver, Tmahdae Penn back. In the spring season, Penn had 448 receiving yards in 5 games with 5 touchdowns.
The running game will be a factor, and the running game that performs best will likely win the game. It is a tough game to call. The teams are probably pretty evenly matched, and while Ferrum has the home field advantage I look for this one to come down to the wire.....Special teams may be the difference.
The last piece of the puzzle may be the intangible motivation of Coach Adams vs. Averett. Both teams will be fired up, and I think this motivation will play in Ferrum's favor.
Look for this to come down to who makes the fewest mistakes, and who has the ball last.
My prediction:
Ferrum 38
Averett 31
As for the rest of the ODAC:
Baldwin Wallace @ Hampden-Sydney
Methodist @ Shenandoah
Randolph Macon @ Dickinson
Gettysburg @ Bridgewater
Washington and Lee @ CNU
Go Panthers!!!
