Deaton's Kick Lifts Ferrum to 5-1 - Panthers win on Homecoming 24-23

I started watching the game on the internet, knowing that I would have to leave shortly after it started to go to work. I watched long enough to see the first 10 points scored by Shenandoah. Their points came quickly, and I was quite concerned that this may prove to be a long day. I went from optimistic to worried all in less than a quarter. It proved to be worries unfounded as Ferrum would come back and to say the least, make a game of it.

On a beautiful homecoming day  with only a slight hint of rain just before the game, Ferrum took the field against a very capable Shenandoah Hornets team that had one plan.......to ruin Ferrum's homecoming.....and it almost worked.

The first quarter was nothing to write home about for the Panthers, They gave up a touchdown, a pass interception, and a field goal in what seemed like no time at all, creating a 10-0 deficit. Shenandoah would add a second field goal in the next period, extending their lead to 13-0. After the ensuing kickoff, Ferrum would start a three play drive capped off by a 71 yard pass from Titus Jones to Tmahdae Penn and Ferrum was on the board but still trailing 13-7. Shenandoah would have another drive to close the half, and were working toward another score when their quarterback threw a pass to a wide open, and I mean WIDE OPEN Miles Moore. Moore was alone in the end zone and the ball hit him right in the hands when he could not find the handle and it fell incomplete.  Shenandoah would work the ball down to the 1 yard line with four seconds left on the clock, and they attempted a dive play right into the middle of the line. Ferrum held and this is how the first half would end.

Ferrum kicked off to start the second half, and stopped the Hornets after seven plays, forcing them to punt. Ferrum would take possession and create a 9 play drive, but was not able to score, and punted back to Shenandoah. On their next possession, Shenandoah would turn the ball over on a Kevin Williams interception, giving Ferrum the ball at the SU 12. In 2 plays Ferrum would again find pay dirt as Titus Jones scored from four yards out and with a Seth Deaton extra point, Ferrum had clawed their way out of a 13 point deficit to take a 14-13 lead.

Shenandoah would take the kickoff, and put together an 11 play 75 yard drive that ended with a 3 yard plunge by Rashadeen Byrd, putting the Hornets back on top 20-14.

As the 4th quarter began, both teams exchanged punts, and the offensive momentum seemed somewhat subdued. A pass interception by Ferrum DB Damien Dula gave Ferrum the ball at Hornets 48. On the next play, Jones would find Penn for his second receiving touchdown, giving the lead back to the Panthers 21-20 with 6:03 left in the game.

Shenandoah was not done as the hornets took the kickoff and put together a 12 play 65 yard drive ending with a 24 yard Patrick Ritchie field goal putting the visitors back on top 23-21 with 1:47 left in the game.

With one last chance, Ferrum's Titus Jones engineered an 11 play 62 yard drive that led to Seth Deaton punching through the game winning field goal with 3 seconds left. Final Ferrum 24, SU 23. This was a great win for Ferrum, leaving them 5-1, and still very much in contention for the conference title......although they will need some help.

On to Hampden-Sydney!

Go Panthers!
