Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda...
Ferrum loses tough game at Hampden-Sydney

The start of the game was hard to watch. The Tigers scored first with less than four minutes elapsed, and secured a quick 7-0 lead. Ferrum was not able to do anything of consequence, and punted to Hampden-Sydney after running 5 plays for 6 yards.

The Tigers and Panthers would each punt one more time as the defensive teams made life tough for the opposing offenses. A personal foul against Ferrum for contacting the receiver of the punt when calling a fair catch, gave Hampden-Sydney the ball in good field position. On the second play of the drive ( The first play was a penalty against H-SC making it 1st and 20) Tanner Bernard hit Josh Jones on a 46 yard pass play for a TD, and the Tigers were up 14-0 with 7:45 left in the first quarter.

Ferrum would come back on a 14 play 92 yard drive culminating in a Titus Jones 8 yard run, putting Ferrum on the board making it 14-7. After the kickoff with 1:35 left in the first quarter, The Tigers struck again on a 2 play drive that covered 67 yards and resulted in their 3rd score of the quarter, putting them up 21-7 over Ferrum.

Ferrum came right back down the field on an 11 play 47 yard drive that this time resulted in an interception. The tigers would give it right back on their ensuing drive when Ja'Kari Williams picked off Bernard returning it to the H-SC 25. From here Ferrum would put together a 5 play drive resulting in a touchdown pass from Jones to Daniel Lamb, making the score 21-14. The ensuing kickoff was fumbled by the Tigers and Ferrum recovered at the H-SC 38 yard line. The Panthers would again work out a solid drive and this time Titus Jones would pick up his second touchdown of the day on a 6 yard run. The Seth Deaton extra point would tie the game at 21 with 2:45 left in the half.

After the kickoff the Tigers would put together a 9 play drive and score with 0:41 left to take the lead 28-21. Ferrum was not done as they in the last 0:41 put together a 6 play drive giving Seth Deaton a chance to add three points to the scoreboard. Unfortunately, the kick fell short and the halftime score was 28-21.

The third quarter was dominated by the Panthers as they took the second half kickoff and again put together a 14 play drive resulting in a Jones to Conner Sides touchdown pass that tied the score at 28. The Tigers could do nothing on their first possession of the second half as they went 4 and out and turned the ball over to Ferrum on downs. At this point, Ferrum had the momentum but on this drive, Jones was again intercepted. The turnover did not result in a score, as the Tigers went three and out and had to punt as the Ferrum defense held. Ferrum was again able to put together a nice drive, but they had to settle for a field goal, and again, the Deaton kick was just short.

Two big scoring strikes in the fourth quarter would give Hampden-Sydney a lead of 42-28, and that would eventually be the final score.

There is a lot I could say about this game, but its water under the bridge at this point. It's hard to dig out of a hole, but Ferrum showed a never quit attitude. They played very well, and did not in any way make it easy for H-SC. It was a really good game.

Ferrum will return to action Saturday as the Quakers of Guilford College come to Ferrum. I will be there!

Go Ferrum!
