The trends continued for both teams, as the Hornets improved to 4-0 while Ferrum fell to 0-4. Due to Hurricane Ian, I had to work Saturday, and was not able to watch the game live online. I had hoped to watch it Saturday night, but Shenandoah apparently does not archive their videos of their games, therefore this will be based mainly on stats of the game.
Shenandoah operated a no huddle offense the entire game. Their first drive they wasted no time (1min. 46 sec.) getting the ball down the field and finding the end zone. Ferrum started Jesper Karjalainen (this name may present more of a spelling challenge than Ferrum All American T.J. Grzesikowski) under center and the freshman held his own completing 15 of 25 passes for 148 yards, with 0 interceptions. This was a solid performance for a freshman's first start, and I am hoping we will see solid improvement as time goes on. Ferrum actually had more passing yards than the Hornets did, 148 yards to 144.
As for the ground game, Ferrum ran the ball 29 times for 108 yards averaging 3.7 yards per carry. Red Zone opportunities were there as Ferrum was in the Red Zone three times but were not able to convert. For the Hornets, they ran the ball 42 times for 290 yards and 2 touchdowns. They averaged 6.9 yards per carry.
Ferrum, as far as I can tell just was not able to keep pace with the Hornets. Statistics will only tell you so much, but I see things getting better. Shenandoah may be the big sleeper in the conference race this year. Watch for them to be in the running to the end. Ferrum will have a good chance to pick up their first win next week as Hampden - Sydney visits W.B.Adams stadium. The Tigers are 1-3, with their only win coming against Greensboro. They have a very solid offense but seem to be somewhat porous on the defensive side of the ball.
I will have a pre-game post out later in the week.
Go Panthers!
