Ferrum Comes Home, Looking For First Win

Ferrum returns to W.B. Adams stadium Saturday for the first time in quite a while. It was September 10th when the Panthers played their first and so far, only home game.  This week, the Tigers of Hampden Sydney come to town, and they have seen their struggles as they only have one win, a 70-28 win over Greensboro. Even though the Tigers only have one win, they should not be taken lightly. Tiger quarterback Tanner Bernard is quite capable as he has thrown for 995 yards and eight touchdowns. He has run for two touchdowns, and interestingly enough, he did not play in the Greensboro game.

The Tigers running game has had its bright spots too, as Melik Frost leads all rushers with 404 yards and has scored seven touchdowns. Frost also has 123 receiving yards on 10 catches, with one touchdown. Look for Josh Jones to be a strong compliment to the running attack. Overall, H-SC is a solid football team offensively......it's their defense that has raised questions.

Through four games, Hampden-Sydney is giving up 34.5 points per game, and they seem especially susceptible on the ground where they have given up 827 yards and 10 touchdowns. Through the air, opponents have averaged 262 yards per game, and have scored 7 times.

Ferrum will still have to give a solid, consistent performance in order to take advantage of Hampden-Sydney. With Korkalainen at QB, look for Ferrum's offense to begin to be more productive. Offensively Ferrum will have to put up points to stay with this team....and they can do that. Look for Zac Smiley to have a good day, and I think the deep pass will become part of Ferrum's repertoire.

On the defensive side, Ferrum will have to be improved as this Tigers will put up points. Ferrum has given up 884 yards on the ground, and 9 touchdowns. Through the air, Ferrum has given up 827 yards and 7 touchdowns.

Look for a shootout and it may come down to penalties and turnovers. This is a winnable game for Ferrum, but they can't afford mistakes of any kind. If the defense can turn a page and get some take aways, and the offense can convert them and red zone chances, look for Ferrum to pick up win number one.

Playing at home, I give the Panthers the edge.
