Not a lot went right for the Panthers as the Hampden-Sydney Tigers came into W.B. Adams Stadium, and pretty much had their way the entire afternoon. It started with the second play from scrimmage going for a 72-yard touchdown as quarterback Tanner Bernard hit receiver Jamahdia Whitby, who took the pass down the sidelines for the score. Another touchdown was added soon after, and the score was 14-0 with less than five minutes elapsed in the game.
Bright spots for Ferrum were few and far between, but one came after the Tigers scored their third passing touchdown. The extra point was blocked, and recovered by Avion Smith, who took the ball to the end zone for a seldom scene 2-point defensive PAT. Another bright spot was when Ferrum running back Zac Smiley broke the goal line plane on a one-yard touchdown carry. Chase Deaton's extra point made the score 20-9.
H-SC would score once more before the end of the first half on a 6-yard run by Malik Frost. The two-point conversion was successful, making the halftime score, Hampden-Sydney 28 Ferrum 9.
Each team would score once in the second half. The Tigers scored once again through the air on a 42-yard pass play, making the score Hampden-Sydney 35 Ferrum 9. Ferrum would tack on one more score on a beautiful 87-yard punt return by Monzelle Campbell. The final score would be 35-16, Hampden-Sydney.
So, for Ferrum there continue to be more questions than answers, and the opponent does not get any easier this coming week as Washington and Lee comes to town. My hope is that this week of practice will lead to some answers.
The Distinction No Team Wants
Ferrum fielded its first football team in 1955. Team #1 would win two games that year. In fact, there have been only five teams to date that have only won one game...1956, 1957, 1959, 1996, and 2014. There has NEVER been a Ferrum team to go winless. While there is a half of a season to go, and while I do believe that the team will continue to evolve as the season goes on, the current trend is concerning. Let's turn this thing around Ferrum, Get back to those winning ways. Start it for homecoming!
Go Panthers!
