Ferrum College Athletics Putting Wraps On A Very Successful Year

When I looked at the Ferrum website this evening, I noticed something had happened that is pretty rare indeed. The Christopher Newport Women;s softball team fell twice today, and was eliminated from the USA South Tournament. Both losses came at the hands of the Ferrum Panthers. This double win over the Captains gives Ferrum the automatic qualifier for the NCAA tournament. This will be the second Ferrum team to make an NCAA tournament this year, as the Women's basketball team also won their conference tournament, and represented the conference in the NCAA tournament.
Overall, this has been a phenomenal year for Ferrum athletics. Football got things started, as the Panthers finished their first season under Coach Dave Harper with a 7-3 record, and was in a position to win the conference title. Women's soccer posted a winning record with a 9-8-2 mark, and was 5-3-1 in the conference.
Men's basketball began the season looking to replace Derek Mitchell who had been a spark plug on last years squad. Senior Marcus Mayo stepped in nicely, and Ferrum had early success winning 7 of it's first 11 games. A tough stretch of 5 losses at the end of the year left Ferrum with a 13-13 record.
The Women's team, as mentioned earlier had great success finishing the year with a 23-6 record, and a trip to Kentucky to the NCAA tournament.
Ferrum's women's swimming had it's inaugural season, picking up 2 wins. Anneleisse Alvarez paced Ferrum much of the season, and showed very strong in the Virginia Tech Invitational.
The Women's Lacrosse team posted an 11-6 record, and were 4-3 in the conference. Ferrum will close out it's Men's Lacrosse season with a match against Christopher Newport on the 21st of April. A win in this match would leave Ferrum with a 7-8 record, and would provide the team with the most wins in its short history.
The Ferrum Baseball team stands at 20-14 with three non conference games remaining. It has been a year of home dominance for the Panthers as they have won 13 of their 15 games at Panther Field.
Women's Softball was strong all season as they finished the year 35-12. This was a record number of wins for Ferrum in Women's softball, eclipsing the 2010 season high of 31 wins. Of course, this total can still increase in the NCAA tournament.
Lastly, the Men;s golf team has been quite impressive this season. They participated in 8 regular season tournaments, and the USA South tournament. Below is how they finished, followed by the number of teams in the tournament.

4/15
2/11
4/15
7/11
1/4
17/30
13/15
2/9 (Scott Obenshain wins Medalist Honors)
5/7 (USA South Tournament)

Overall it has been a very successful year for Ferrum athletics. The year is not over, but no matter how things wind up, there should be some very proud Panther fans out there!
